Mr. Courtney has extensive experience in both inter partes review (IPR) proceedings and patent litigation in federal district and appellate courts. He has represented or advised clients in matters involving numerous technological areas, including semiconductors, network security hardware and software, power management in mobile devices, smart phone interfaces, biotechnology for small molecule identification, and aerospace manufacturing.
Mr. Courtney’s non-patent experience includes convincing the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit to reverse a district court ruling that a client’s sculpture was not protectible by copyright. Mr. Courtney has also defended complex business litigation matters, including suits alleging false advertising and breaches of fiduciary duty.
Mr. Courtney has a JD, cum laude, from Harvard Law School, a PhD in mathematics from UC Berkeley, and BA with highest honors in mathematics from UC Berkeley. Prior to law school, Mr. Courtney taught and researched mathematics at the University of Iowa, where he focused on problems in linear algebra and functional analysis.
